Police unilaterally abandon all Blockupy personal exclusion orders

The unsustainable unconstitutionality of the total shutdown of Blockupy is beginning to manifest itself. This evening (15 May) the Police HQ in Frankfurt declared that all person-specific exclusion orders relating to the Blockupy protests on 16-19 May, which banned named individuals from entering inner Frankfurt, were immediately rescinded. The announcement appears to have followed preparatory discussions…

Administrative Court upholds Blockupy-ban

The Administrative Court in Frankfurt has today (14 May) confirmed the general Blockupy-ban issued by Frankfurt’s public order councillor Markus Frank. Likewise, the Occupy camp in Willy-Brandt Platz may also be ‘temporarily’ cleared away. The court did provide for the possibility of permitting an anti-capitalism demonstration this Saturday subject to certain conditions set by the authorities.…

“We have fought hard to ensure that the event is prohibited”: Councillor Markus Frank (CDU)

“All Germans shall have the right to resist any person seeking to abolish this constitutional order, should no other remedy be possible.” Basic Law Art.20(4). After a five-hour administrative court hearing today (Sat. 12 May 2012) Frankfurt am Main’s Public Order Department has reiterated its total opposition to any protest whatsoever against Europe’s austerity politics.…

Occupy: a brief note on three antique responses to debt crisis

It is worth remarking that three broad types of response to debt crisis could be found in antiquity, in the Mediterranean-Mesopotamian area. We say broad types because it is quite possible that the particular type remarked upon was rather the predominant or defining characteristic of a movement, and could be accompanied by the other types…

Don’t shop? Then you must be undead

We record for posterity the views of Stephen Roach, non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia and faculty member of Yale University. According to Mr. Roach (paywall): The global economy is being hobbled by a new generation of zombies – the economic walking dead. American consumers are in the early stages of an unprecedented retrenchment. Seemingly…

Law and Infinite Debt

In his critique of free will, Spinoza’s first argument against his opponents, named (Heereboord) and unnamed (Descartes, Aquinas, Burgersdijk) is that the intellect is not only the same as the will, but that in no way can the will be said to exceed the intellect.1 The position is characterised as the claim that…

Bearing Justice

The ‘domino effect’ is a remarkably crude mechanical metaphor which once again implicitly informs mainstream characterisations1 of the revolutions in play in Tunisia, Egypt, and to a lesser degree Algeria.  The assumption of a spatially linear series of cause and effect, pleasing as it is to the relaxed mind, serves at once to localise the…

What we are reading… Wanderings through the Environments of Animals and Humans | Von Uexküll

(Streifzüge durch die Umwelten der Tieren und Menschen (1933), translated by Stephen Connelly [*]) Translator’s note: In this short introduction von Uexküll outlines his view of passive consciousness and its relation to affective being which would prove so inspirational to among others Heidegger, Deleuze and Agamben.  The selected text speaks suggestively of ‘little machinists’ and,…

A Face Decomposed

Within the alchemical legal doctrine of royal circles, the doubling of the heir to the throne’s body as the expression of the nation’s future health requires, as Ian Jack has noted, that the utmost composure be displayed.1  Serenity should not descend from timeless altitudes, for were it to do so, the darkness of becoming would engulf…
