Warwick Law School invites abstracts for our one-day postgraduate conference on Law v Humanity. This conference aims to provide a platform for Postgraduate Researchers to engage with the complex intersections of law and our shared humanity. In an era of rapid societal changes, technological advancements, increasing violence, dehumanisation, armed conflicts, and evolving global challenges, it is essential to discuss, critically and collectively, the implications of these events for justice, equality, ethics, rights, the rule(s) of law, and the human condition of people and communities. The conference aims to provide a conducive and supportive environment for postgraduate researchers to share ideas, work-in-progress, draft chapters, (upgrade) papers, and receive valuable feedback from peers and academic staff. By encouraging different theoretical, methodological, and inter-disciplinary responses, the conference will create a space for thoughtful discussions on issues surrounding law and humanity.

• The role of the law in protecting, defining, regulating, confining, erasing ‘humanity’.
• The limits and potential of law and policy to protect human rights, promoting social justice, addressing inequalities, and preventing violence on grounds of gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, migration status, coloniality, etc.
• The role of domestic and international legal frameworks, governments, organisations, and civil society and grassroots groups in developing policy and practice to safeguard vulnerable people such as refugees, internally displaced persons, forced migrants, or stateless persons.
• Exploring individual and collective forms of resistance to the law, legal authority, and judicial processes in the name of humanity.
• Legal implications of technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, digital surveillance, biotechnology, and digital ‘social’ platforms, on human values and ethical considerations.
• Legal responses to global and domestic issues arising in different areas of international, commercial, criminal, constitutional, family, labour, intellectual property, environmental, and health law, financial regulation, etc.
• Doctrinal, socio-legal, and interdisciplinary approaches to questions concerning the relationship between law and humanity.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION AND DEADLINE

Interested candidates are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 250 words via the PGR Conference 2024 form by Monday, 8th January 2024. Successful applicants will be informed by 22^nd January 2024.

The conference is open to Postgraduate Researchers from any department and institution.

The conference will be in-person with an ‘hybrid’ option. We will circulate the link to attend online closer to the time and encourage anyone who needs to present online to get in touch with us, so that we can work together to accommodate any requests.
